January 20 Concert to Feature Distinguished Flutist

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (January 4, 2008)—Lorenzo Muti, artistic director and conductor for The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, announced today that the orchestra’s January 20 concert will feature a performance by internationally-acclaimed flutist, Mimi Stillman. The 3 p.m. concert will be held at the Carolina Theatre in Durham.

The concert will consist of performances of Lowell Liebermann’s “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39,” with Stillman as soloist; Béla Bartók’s “Rumanian Folk Dances”; and Franz Joseph Hayden’s “Symphony no. 103, 'Drum Roll'.”

“This will be Mimi Stillman's third collaboration with the orchestra,” said Muti. “Since her first appearance in 2000, Mimi has become a favorite of our audience because of her incredible technical skills, her wonderful stage presence and her natural musical sensitivity. The ‘Liebermann Concerto,’ which is a real tour de force for the soloist, will be a perfect showcase for Mimi's marvelous talent.”

A Boston native, Stillman has gained international acclaim for her performances as soloist and chamber musician at venues throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. She was the youngest wind player ever to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and she won the Astral Artistic Services competition. In addition, Stillman is a prominent educator. She has taught master classes and presented lecture recitals at prominent universities and flute societies including: The National Flute Association, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Flute Society of Washington, D.C. and the St. Louis Flute Society.

“I'm delighted to be performing again with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle,” Stillman said. “Maestro Lorenzo Muti is a brilliant and sensitive conductor, and he and the orchestra are a pleasure to work with.”

To emphasize its commitment to engaging young people with great classical music, the orchestra provides free seating at every concert to students of all ages.
